My Review of Roofman (2025)!!!- (⭐⭐⭐⭐½/5)

Roofman is the latest release from acclaimed director: Derek Cianfrance, famously known for making raw and emotional movies such as Blue Valentine. I was fortunate to see Roofman at the UAE premiere, thanks to Reel Cinemas, ItaliaFilm ME and ItzyReviews. I personally went in with my expectations low after seeing how the film was marketed and the lack of hype surrounding it, but man oh man, my socks were BLOWN off.

Based off a true story inspired by terrible decisions, the story follows a divorced ex-army officer with 3 children and crazy observational skills. Using these skills for the noble intent of providing his children with a better life, he turns to a world of crime, which sets off a bizarre chain of events. Every single character is fleshed out perfectly in this film, the pacing is balanced and the score (albeit soft at times) sets the tone for this quirky, offbeat, character-driven drama.

Channing Tatum is an absolute gem. This is easily his best role and he brings such emotion in his role that ultimately tests your morality. This is a man who is committing the most devious crimes known to man: robbing a McDonalds, illegally residing in a Toys "R" Us and even physically assaulting people. But at the end of the day, Channing Tatum brings a subdued pain that forces you to sympathize with him, even through the most questionable times. Kirsten Dunst plays a silent yet emotional role that anchors each scene emotionally. She doesn't have any powerful or dramatic monologues, but chooses to show her depth and sentiment through her eyes. Peter Dinklage aces his role as a stuck-up boss who cares about no one but himself and LaKeith Steinfield brings more than laughs during the most tense scenes.

Shot on gorgeous 35mm, the cinematography by Andrij Parekh encompasses the sadness and tension through every scene, even making me lean out of my seat at times. The editing by Jim Helton is crisp and neat, never making you feel bored or lethargic, but always keeping you on your toes and inducing the feeling of tension.

The only gripe I have with this film is that I wish they delved into the relationship dynamics a bit more, showing how Channing Tatum's character could have possibly been abusive or manipulative. The score was also quite soft throughout the movie which didn't really aid some tense scenes.

All in all, Roofman is probably one of the most underrated films of the year. I thoroughly enjoyed it and appreciated Channing Tatum for taking on such a bold role. Hope it
bags some Oscar nominations this year. Catch this one in theatres as soon as possible. 100% deserves more hype and was glad to check it out at the premiere.

⭐ Rating: 9/10 and catch it in cinemas ASAP!
